A quick way to edit Autopilot .csv file

I have come across many instances online where people have struggled dealing and working with multiple csv files. If you have to upload multiple rows or simply add an attribute, then it is not a straight forward task. Formatting of Autopilot csv files is highly sensitive. If you try to edit them directly in Excel and then save them as .csv, the file will be rendered useless.

By the way, if you are looking for a quick way to create the .csv files then here is the code -

New-Item -Type Directory -Path "C:\HWID"
Set-Location -Path "C:\HWID"
Set-ExecutionPolicy -Scope Process -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted
Install-Script -Name Get-WindowsAutoPilotInfo
Get-WindowsAutoPilotInfo.ps1 -OutputFile AutoPilotHWID.csv

You can use -append parameter to add multiple rows, but if you want to do it using a GUI or add additional attributes, then you can use the method below which I have found to be effective.

1. Rename the exported .csv file to .txt
2. Open Excel and open the .txt file from Open->Browse-><.txt file> (Enable All Files *.*)
3. Excel will open the .txt file in Text editor.
4. Select the Delimited option.

5. Select the Comma option only.

6. Set Text for each of the columns.

7. Click Finish.
8. Edit in Excel as necessary. In this case, I am adding a Group Tag. (Note: The headers are case sensitive so use it in the right format)

9. Save as .csv and Import as normal. (Note: Save in default ANSI and not UTF-8)

That's all to it. Happy days..

  1. Hello, thanks for the detailed instruction, I followed as described, but I cannot import the resulting modified .csv, as it returns a formatting error (incorrect header). The original ( not modified csv )works perfectly. Please advise. Thanks

  2. Hello, thanks for the detailed information, I tried to follow the described steps, in an attempt to add Group Tag column. When I try to upload the csv to the autopilot devices, it returns an error ( "Incorrect headers, cannot proceed further
" ). With default columns ( no GroupTag added), the .csv loads just fine. Please advise, thank you.
